What is the Hidden In Plain Sight Ministry?

It is an initiative of the C&MA to start churches among the working class people of Taiwan.

The Need

Historically, the evangelism efforts in Taiwan have focused mostly on the Mandarin-speaking middle class.  We praise God that some of those people responded and the C&MA in Taiwan today has 26 churches located throughout the island.  The denomination has grown, and the pastors and church members can now shoulder the responsibility of continuing the ministry among the middle class. 

A few years ago Taiwan missionaries became aware that the working class people with whom they have contact on a daily basis are not being reached with the gospel.  It is a large group of people—at least 13 million people.  It includes the people who work in neighbourhood stores, taxi drivers, food stall workers, labourers, service industry workers, farmers, and many more.  Less than 0.5% believe in Jesus Christ.

Until recently, there have been few intentional efforts made to reach out to the Taiwanese working class in a culturally relevant manner.  They were being neglected.  It was as if they are "hidden in plain sight." We have looked past them as we made the effort to share the gospel with others.  We don't want to do that any longer!

Our Strategy

Lorne and Kathy-Lu are two of a group of international workers that moved to the western part of Yunlin County in 2006-08.  That location was chosen because there are very few churches to share the good news about Jesus. 

We are living in a farming community, Baojhong Township, and have begun the process of establishing friendships.  We have joined other international workers and some Taiwanese Christians, participating in community service projects.  This lets us get to know the community and allows residents to become acquainted with us.

Partnering with those who have a similar interest, we hope to assist in the starting of a church that will minister to the residents of Baojhong and Sihhu Townships. 

Recently, a small group of people began meeting to worship God and study the Bible.  The group includes believers and some who are seeking the truth.  As this group grows and others like it are started, a church will be established that can be a lasting witness to Jesus Christ in Western Yunlin.

• Pray for financial resources and that we will be wise in our use of them.
• Become a donor and help provide the financial resources.

3.  Become an ON-SITE PARTNER! 

• Contact us about becoming involved a short-term or long-term missions trip to Taiwan.  
• Contact one of our partnering churches and join in their efforts to help those hidden in Plain Sight learn about Jesus.
